Solution

Soil formation takes place by the process of weathering.

The process involves breaking down of rocks, minerals and other materials by action if continuously changing weather on Earth, this process leads to formation of soil

Weathering involves a group of processes by which surface rock, minerals and other materials disintegrates into smaller particles by the action of atmosphere and hydrosphere. The weathering processes often are slow (take hundred to thousands of years). The amount of time that rocks and minerals have been exposed at the earth's surface influence the degree to which they have been weathered.

Weathering is divided into three categories:

  • Physical weathering
  • Chemical weathering
  • Biological weathering
