Question

Explain the neural regulation of respiratory process in man

Open in App
Solution

Regulation of Respiration
Human beings have ability to regulate the respiratory rhythm to meet the body demands. It is done by nervous system. A specialised centre of respiratory regulation called respiratory rhythm centre is present in medulla region that is primarily responsible for this regulation. Another centre located in pons region of brain called pneumotaxic centre moderates the function of respiratory rhythm centre

In addition to these there are chemosensitive area located adjacent to rhythm centre which are highly sensitive to CO2 and H+. As CO2 and H+ increase, this area gets activated so as to provide signals to eliminate them. Aortic arch and carotid artery associated receptors can also sense changes in CO2 and H+ concentration and send signals to rhythm Centre for proper action.
