Significance of 3 chambered heart in Amphibians
In amphibians, the atria are divided into two separate chambers, and a single ventricle in which some (but not total) mixing of oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood occurs. This three chambered heart provides some separation of blood coming from the lungs and blood coming from the body. Amphibians also absorb some oxygen through their skin, which supplements pulmonary respiration. This supplementary respiration through the skin mitigates the lesser efficiency of the single ventricle.
Significance of 3 and half chambered heart in Reptiles.
Reptile’s posses a heart having three and half chambers that partially separate oxygenated from deoxygenated blood. With this three and half chambered heart, they are able to generate high blood pressures than amphibians and can sustain higher levels of muscular activity.
