Question

explain why KO2 is paramagnetic in nature ?

Open in App
Solution

In KO2 oxygen exist as superoxide i.e. O2-

MO Configuration :

O2(16e-) =σ1s2σ*1s2σ2s2σ*2s2σ2pz2(π2px2=π2py2)(π*2px1=π*2py1)

O2-(15e-)=σ1s2σ*1s2σ2s2σ*2s2σ2pz2(π2px2=π2py2)(π*2px1=π*2py0) thus paramagnetic due to presence of unpaired electron

Thus KO2 is paramagnetic in nature.
