Food is cooked in microwave oven by dielectric heating. That is, heat is produced by the molecular rotation of the polar molecules in the food. Some type of plastics can be used in microwave ovens because they allow the microwaves to pass through them. In this way the food inside the plastic container is cooked while the container stays cool. Not all plastics are safe to use in microwave oven.
