Question

For hydrogenation, catalytic activity increases from Group 5-11. It's also mentioned that the activity is maximum for groups 7-9. So, Is the activity higher in group 11 or in group 9?

Solution

Dear student, The catalytic property increases from group 5-11, this is a general trend which means that the catalytic property increases from left to right in d-block.

The activity is maximum at 7-9, and then it is almost constant from 9 to 11 and doesn't decreases. As the catalytic property depends upon the variable oxidation and size as well therefore in total the maximum catalytic property is maximum for 7 to 9 group. As the size of group 11 and 12 is small therefore they have a little lower catalytic property.
