Question

Form the skeleton of the equation and balance it by half reaction method.

This question is from the chapter Redox Reactions. Earlier answer given by meritnation expert was wrong. She was unable to judge that this questions asks the precedure of the reaction to e balanced.

Solution

The word form of the equation as given by you is

zinc reacts with conc. nitric acid to produce zinc nitrate nitrogen dioxide and water

The skeletal form of this equation is as follows

Zn + conc. HNO3 → ZnNO3 + NO2 + H2O

Now as the given equation is in molecular form, it can be balanced straightaway without using the half reaction method (half reaction method is useful when an equation is given in ionic form). Thus the balanced chemical equation will be

Zn + conc. 2HNO3 → ZnNO3 + NO2 + H2O
