Reasons for replacing the use of fossil fuels by alternative sources of energy:
1. These are non-renewable source of energy and we are depleting our resources rapidly.
2. Use of fossil fuels releases green house gases like carbon dioxide that have brought about dramatic climate changes and have increased seawater levels and decreased amount of polar ice caps.
3. Combustion of fossil fuels also produces other air pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic compounds and heavy metals.
4. Harvesting, processing, and distributing fossil fuels can also create environmental concerns. Coal mining methods, particularly mountaintop removal and strip mining, have negative environmental impacts, and offshore oil drilling poses a hazard to aquatic organisms.
