Question

Gas A has critical temperature of 134 K while Gas B has a critical temperature of 405 K. Which gas is easily liquefiable? Give reasons.

Solution

Critical temperature of a gas is defined as the maximum temperature at which a gas can be liquefied that is the temperature above which it cannot be liquefied no matter how much high pressure is applied. As the critical temperature of gas B is higher than that of gas A, therefore it can be more easily liquefied than gas A. This is, it does not require to be cooled to a temperature as low as 134 K.

Hence it is easier to liquify gas B than gas A.
