Take a tava (used for cooking “roti”), whose handle is made of wood. Put the tava on the oven to make it hot. Now touch the handle of the tava. You can feel that the handle is still at a temperature that we can bear. But the hot metal surface of the tava will be at very high temperature and if we touch it, it will burn our fingers. This shows that, the handle, which is made up of wood, is a bad conductor of heat.
Convection is the process in which heat is transferred from one point to another by the actual movement of the material particles from a region of high temperature to a region of low temperature. Convection is possible in liquids and gases.
For convection to take place, the molecules of the medium must be free to move. In solids, the molecules are not free to move from their mean position.
