we know that the power consumed is given as

P = V²/R

here, V is the voltage and R is the equivalent resistance of the circuit.

Now,

for a series circuit

R = R1 + R2 + R3 + ..... + Rn

and

for a parallel circuit

1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 + ..... + 1/Rn

so,

using appropriate formula for R the equivalent power can be calculated in a series or parallel circuit.
