Question

give balanced equations by partial equation method

reaction of excesss ammonia with chlorine -ammonia as a reducing agent-

1.ammonia first reacts with chlorine to give hydrogen chloride and nitrogen.

2.hydrogen chloride then further reacts with excesss ammonia to give ammonium chloride.

Solution

Dear student!
The two equations are :

1. NH3 + Cl2 -> HCl + N2

2. NH3 + HCl -> NH4Cl

Here, the first reaction is balanced as:

=>First of all, no. of N atoms are balanced by multiplying ammonia with 2

2NH3 + Cl2 -> HCl + N2

=> Now, no. of H-atoms are balanced on right side as;

2NH3 + Cl2 -> 6HCl + N2

=> Finally, no. of Cl-atoms are balanced as:

2NH3 + 3Cl2 -> 6HCl + N2

The equation is balanced.

The second equation is already balanced as the no. of atoms are equal on both sides.
