Question

Give reasons for the following:

(a) CN¯ ion is known but CP¯ ion is not known.
(b) NO2 demerises to form N2O4
(c) ICl is more reactive than I2

i) In contrast to nitrogen which forms N2 in the gas phase with a triple bond, phosphorus forms P4 which has four strained single bonds. Due to its size and way it exist Phosphorous don't form CP-

ii) NO dimerizes to N2O4 because NO2 has odd number of unpaired electrons . So, it is unstable according to molecular orbital theory. Hence, it dimerizes to form N2O4.

iii) ICl is more reactive than I2 because ICl is a polar bond where as I2 has a non-polar bond.
