When in a compound an element is present in the intermediate oxidation state can act as both an oxidizing as well as reducing agent.

Oxidizing action of H2O2:

H2O2 + 2 Fe2+ + 2 H+ → 2 Fe3+ + 2 H2O

Reducing action of H2O2:

2 MnO4- + 5 H2O2 + 6 H+ → 2 Mn2+ + 8 H2O + 5 O2.
