Since India is was a patriarchal society, women were considered to be limited only to the household chores. Novels in the hands of women was considered a social stigma. Women were discouraged from reading novels. Though there were a few novels published during the 19th century which highlighted the plight of women such as - Sewasadan, Indulekha, Indirabai etc. Despite of such conditions many women read the novels. The trend of novels was seen growing amongst the women. Also, many women writers came up. These writers usually had their family support. But overall, women were expected to take care of household and not read novels.
