Question

How are brass objects protected from corrosion ?

Open in App
Solution

One way to protect brass from corrosion is to put protective paint over it, just like we do in iron. The protective coating is effective but overtime small cracks and pinholes appears in coating through which it allows water vapour to make contact with the metal and corrosions begins. Other type of corrosion brass undergoes is Galvanic corrosion.

Few good ways to protect brass from corrosion via galvanic corrosion is

  1. Galvanic corrosion can be avoided by coupling metals close to the electrochemical series.
  2. Fixing insulating material between two metals.
  3. By using larger anodic metal and smaller cathodic metal.
