On the basis of administration, forests and wildlife are classified as under:
Reserved forests: The most valuable of forests come under this category. Activities like hunting and grazing are prohibited in such forests unless very specific orders are sought.
Protected forests: One-third forests of India fall in this category. Activities like hunting and grazing are allowable for communities who live on the borderline of these forests.
Unclassified forests: These forests can belong to either government or individuals, imposes no prohibition on cattle grazing or hunting.
