how are our lungs so designed so that the exchange of gases is maximized at its surface?
Our lungs are designed in such way that the wind pipe or trachea is divided into two branches called bronchi that enter the lungs. Inside the lungs, these bronchi are further divided into many fine tubes called bronchioles. Bronchioles further give rise to millions of alveoli which have a very large surface area. Therefore, air entering the lungs has a very large surface area for the exchange of gases at the alveoli. Also, the epithelial lining is very fine and do not possess cilia or mucus. This maximizes the exchange at alveoli.
