Question

How boiling point and freezing point is related to vapour pressure?

Open in App
Solution

Boiling point is the temperature at which the vapour pressure of the liquid substance becomes equal to the pressure of surroundings and at this point the liquid changes into vapours.
If we add a non volatile solute in liquid its vapour pressure gets decreased so its boiling point is increased. This is called elevation in boiling point.
Freezing point is the temperature at which the solid and the liquid state of the substance have the same vapour pressure. When a non volatile solute is added to a solvent, the freezing point of the solution is always lower than that of the pure solvent.
