How can a Sponge be bent and compressed though it is a solid ?does the molecules in it have space in them or holes

Sponge has pores present inside it. These pores are filled with air. Therefore, when we squeeze the sponge, air gushes out of the pores, and upon relaxation, air enters the pores. Thus sponge can be squeezed and it regains its shape once released.
