How can we say that, An equation of the type y = mx represent a line passing through the origin.

The given equation is
y = m x
put x = 0 in the above equation, we get
y = m (0) = 0
So, (0, 0) is a solution of the above equation or the given line passes through (0, 0). Now (0, 0) are the coordinates of the origin, so we can say that y = mx passes through the origin.
