Question

how can we say that lowest state of transition metal is basic and highest is acidic?

Open in App
Solution

With the increase in oxidation state of the transition metals, charge density on the metal also increases. This results in increase in polarisation of the anion charge cloud by the metal and hence covalent character increases. The increase in covalent character also increases acidic character of the compound. Thus the compounds of given transition metal becomes more and more acidic as the oxidation state increases.
For eg. VO(+2) < V2O3(+3) < VO2(+4) < V2O5(+5)
CrO(+2) < Cr2O3 (+3) < CrO2(+4) < CrO3(+6)
