Question

how coal gas was used to illuminate street lights?

Open in App
Solution

Coal gas was formed by heating coal in cast iron cylinder. The gas extracted from coal was a mixture of hydrogen, methane, carbonic oxide, nitrogen and some heavy hydrocarbon. This gas was stored in gasometers, which were tanks. This gas was transferred to the burner of street lights by underground pipes. This is how coal gas was used for light street lamps.
