Solution

Preparation of detergent: A synthetic detergent like sodium alkyl sulphate called sodium dodecylsulphate, will be prepared by reacting dodecyl alcohol with sulphuric acid.

CH3-(CH2)10-CH2-OH + H2SO4 → CH3-(CH2)10-CH2-OSO3H + H2O

The resulting dodecylsulphate is converted to sodium salt by a reaction with NaOH.

CH3-(CH2)10-CH2-OSO3H + NaOH → CH3-(CH2)10-CH2-O-Na+ + H2O
