how did Europeans handle the problem of shortage of labor in africa?

Solution
Europeans were attracted by immense resources of land and minerals in Africa.
There was a labour shortage in order to establish plantations.
Hence the Europeans levied large amount of taxes on people which could be paid only by earning wages on working in plantations and mines.
They also shifted the peasants from land by altering traditional laws and this forced many people to enter into the workers market.
Mineworkers were also prohibited from shifting to another place easily.
