Mahatma Gandhi called untouchables, Harijans that is Children Of God. He did the following:

a.​ He organised satyagraha to secure entry for them into the temples, and access to public wells, tanks, roads and schools.
b.He himself cleaned toilets to dignify the work of the bhangi (the sweepers), and persuaded upper castes to change their heart and give up ‘the sin of untouchability'.
c. Gandhi wanted the upper caste to change their heart towards the dalits and give up the practice of untouchability.
