how do you count the number of carbon atoms in a compound ? shall we count functional group carbon atom?

Dear Student

In any organic compound the total number of carbon atoms includes the functional group carbon as well. So, the total count consists of all the carbon atoms.
However, while giving IUPAC nomenclature to any compound, the longest carbon chain is selected.
