Question

How does Anode rays and cathode rays originate in cathode ray discharge tube?

Open in App
Solution

At pressure of about 10-5 atm and high voltage, some invisible rays are produced at cathode which produce fluorescence at the walls of the discharge tube opposite to cathode. These rays are called cathode rays

Simultaneously, the high voltage applied ionizes the gas present in the discharge tube. The ions produced collide with atoms of the gas, knocking electrons off of them and creating more positive ions. These ions and electrons in turn strike more atoms, creating more positive ions which are attracted to the negative cathode. These are the anode rays
