how does blood circulate in earthworm ?
explain in detail. what are the functions of commissural and subneural vessels in earthworm ?
The earthworm has a closed circulatory system, i.e. the blood is confined to blood vessels. An earthworm has neither lungs nor gills but uses its body's surface area to absorb oxygen from the soil. The oxygen is taken in by the dorsal blood vessel and then travels to the hearts. The ventral blood vessel pumps the blood to all organs in need of oxygen. Some blood vessel sends the blood from the ventral blood vessel back to the dorsal blood vessels completing the loop.
The Blood vessels return blood from the body wall and nephridia to the commissural vessels and hence to the dorsal vessel. and then the blood is carried forwards along the dorsal vessel and backwards along the subneural vessels.
