Solution
Green manure also known as cover crop is grown for a specific period of time and then mulched by ploughing back into the soil, in order to increase the fertility and nutrient level of the soil. The cover crop is incorporated inside the soil. The nutrients which are held in these crops are released in the soil. Bacteria present in soil decompose the cover crop or green manure and release nutrients in the soil. This decomposition also results in adding organic matter to the soil. When legumes are used as cover crop or green manure they fix atmospheric nitrogen and increase the fertility of soil.
