Question

How Does Solar Energy Is Converted Into Chemical Energy

Open in App
Solution

Green plants converts light energy into chemical energy by the process of photosynthesis. In photosynthesis, carbohydrate is produced from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sun light.

Here is how it happens: in green plants light is absorbed by a kind of proteins called photosynthetic reaction centers that contain chlorophylls. Some of the light energy gathered by chlorophylls is stored in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The rest of the energy is used to remove electrons from a substance such as water. These electrons are then used in the reactions that turn carbon dioxide into organic compounds like carbohydrate. Thus, solar energy is stored in the form of chemical energy in the process of photosynthesis.
