How does yeast obtain its food ?

Yeast resides over dead and decomposing matter. It secretes hydrolytic enzymes which hydrolyse complex macromolecules of dead organisms into simple molecules. The simplified molecules is then absorbed by yeast cell directly through cell membrane. This type of nutrition is called saprophytic nutrition.
