Question

How is the number of chromosomes of the parent cell maintain in the cells of the offspring's of the sexually reproducing organisms

Open in App
Solution

The chromosome number in a species will be same for both parents and offsprings. The parents have gametes which are the germ cells that carry genetic information to be transferred from one generation to the next. The gametes are produced via meiosis. A mother gamete will carry half the no. of chromosomes present in somatic cells and the father gamete will carry half the no. of chromosomes present in somatic cells. When these two gametes combine at the time of fertilization then the offspring will have a diploid set i.e. the same no of chromosomes will be present in offspring as those of parents.
