Micro-organisms do not have enzymes to breakdown plastic, glass, detergents etc.So such substances enter the food chain and harm the organism in the higher trophic levels. Non-biodegradable substances like radioactive wastes, lead, mercury etc. affect the health of all living organisms.They would also become an burden on the environment because they would accumulate.
