To identify whether a needle is magnetised or not, use the following simple experiment. Take a small piece of thermocol and pierce the needle horizontally on it. Put the thermocol- needle system in a small tumbler of water. When the water becomes steady, the needle will align in the north- south direction, if it is a magnetized one. Otherwise, the alignment of the needle will be random.
