Question

HOW TO PLANTS RESPIRE AT NIGHT IF THE STOMATA IS CLOSED ?

(in the study material it is given that stomata is closed at night)

CHAPTER- TISSUES

Open in App
Solution

During the night time when stomata remain closed, diffusion of gases still take place through cuticle. However this cuticular conductance of gases takes place at a slower rate as compared to stomatal respiration. It is reported that all the activities including metabolism gets slower at night time in most of the plants. So not much oxygen is needed to diffuse into the tissues during this time. So the diffusion of oxygen through cuticle is enough for respiration during night.
