Question

HOW VACUOLE maintain the turgor pressure within cells.?

Open in App
Solution

Turgor pressure is the pressure build up in cell cytoplasm against the cell wall which pushes it outwards. In normal situations, an equal and opposite force called wall pressure is exerted by cell wall to maintain the cell shape and structure.

When a cell is placed in hypotonic solution ( concentration of solutes in the solution is less than that of cell) , the water tends to move from the solution to the cell along the concentration gradient and the volume of the cell increases considerably. During this situation, the size of the vacuole increases and it stores extra water in order to avoid the cell from bursting and die by continuous supply of water into the cell. therefore, the concentration of cell cytoplasm will be maintained and it will exert optimum turgor pressure.

This is how the vacuole will maintains the turgor pressure of the cell by storing extra water
