Solution

Before 1947, under the British, India was divided into presidencies and provinces. The three presidencies were Bengal, Bombay and Madras. The remaining provinces were United Provinces, Central Provinces and Berar, Punjab and Assam. In addition, about a third of India was under the rule of princely states. These states were not directly under the British but they had subsidiary alliances with the Britain.
