Solution

1. Many controversies revolve around the origin of Thar desert. Some believe it to be 4,000 to 10,000 years old while others believe that it formed much earlier, around 2000-1500 BC.It is believed that around this time sudden climatic changes and tectonic movement, ceased Ghaagar river to be a major river and dried up large number of palaeochannels.Due to this change, Ghaagar river started terminating in desert and lost its water capacity which led to aridity and desert formation in the area.

2.However many studies do not share the above opinion. They say that the Sutlej along with Yammuna used to flow here and Satluj was the main tributary of the Ghaggar. The tectonic movements forced the Sutlej westwards, the Yamuna eastwards and thus dried up the Ghaggar river.Henceforth, formation of desert started due to aridity and abandoning of rivers.
