How was the state of Andhra Pradesh formed?
1) The Indian National Congress was the main party of freedom struggle and had promised that once the country won Independence each linguistic group would have its own province.
2) But, after Independence, the Congress could not keep up its promise, as India was already partitioned on the basis of religion and many national leaders thought that the country could not afford any other divisions based on language
3) Many linguistic speaking communities like Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu groups raised protests for want of separate province for them. The strongest protests came from Telugu speaking districts and this situation increased when Nehru went to campaign during the general elections of 1952.
4) Nehru was met with black flags and slogans demanding ‘We want Andhra’ and in October 1952, Potti Sriramulu, a veteran Gandhian went on hunger fast demanding the formation of Andhra state to protect the interests of Telugu speaking community
5) In December 15, 1952, 58 days in his fast Potti Sriramulu died and this made entire Andhra into chaos and confusion. Protests were so intense that Central Government was forced to give into the demands of Telugu speaking groups
6) Thus, on October 1953, the new State of Andhra Pradesh came into being
