Question

how will you justify that the formation of water from hydrogen and oxygen is a chemical and not a physical change

Open in App
Solution

When the constituent of product changes after the reaction it is said to be chemical change. When Hydrogen and Oxygen combines it form water molecule. In water molecule the characteristic physical and chemical properties of hydrogen and oxygen element is lost.It will have different melting and boiling points, different reaction pattern with other elements and compounds etc. Hydrogen and oxygen are gases in atmosphere while water is liquid. Hydrogen on reacting with metals form hydride, whereas water on reacting with metal release hydrogen gas. This all the changes are attributed to change in their basic constitution that is arrangement of electron and and proton. Therefore formation of water is a chemical change.
