Hydrolysis of NCl3 gives NH4OH and HOCl while PCl3 on hydrolysis gives H3PO3 and HCl. EXPLAIN.

In case of NCl3, nitrogen and chlorine have similar electronegativities resulting in non-polar bonds. Nitrogen doesn’t have empty d-orbitals so when it reacts with water the lone pair on nitrogen get donated to hydrogen of water molecule result in formation of NH3 molecule. The reaction can be written as:

NCl3 + H2O → NH3 + 3HOCl

In case of PCl3, phosphorous is less electronegative than chlorine so,it form a polar bond and phosphorus acquire a delta positive charge.when water is get mixed with PCl3 the delta positive ion get attracted towards lone pair of oxygen in water molecule to give different product.The reaction can be written as:

PCl3 + 3H2O → H3PO 3 + 3HCl
