Solution

Dear Student,

Protochordates are the group of organism which lie in between the non chordates and vertebrates in the evolutionary trends. They are more evolved than non chordates and less evolved than vertebrates. They are grouped as the subphylum of phylum chordates. The reason behind classifying them under phylum chordata is that they possess notochord.

Protochordates are further classified as urochordates and cephalochordates. In urochordates the notochord is present in the larval stage only while in cephalochordates the notochord is present from head to tail and persists life long.

Hope you got the answer to your question.

Cheers!!
