I do not think that coins are magnetic because they are made of steel or copper.

Solution

Coins made of iron or nickel would normally be magnetic. Exceptions are alloys, where the exact composition determines whether the charges of the atoms align (there are magnetic and non-magnetic variants of stainless steel). Also some coins are made up of copper and copper is not magnetic.
