Question

(i)write the formula of the sulphate of the element with atomic number 13

(ii)what type of bonding will be present in the oxide of the element with atomic number one

(iii)which feature of the atomic structure occocents for the similarities in chemical properties of the element with atomic number one

(iv)write the electronic configuration of the elements in the third period that gains one electronto change into an anion

Solution

  1. Atomic number = 13. Aluminium has configuration 2, 8, 3. Hence the valency of aluminium is +3 and that of the sulphate ion is 2-.Thus the formula of the sulphate is Al2(SO4)3
  2. Element with atomic number one is hydrogen. Its oxide is H2O. Bonding between oxygen-hydrogen bond is covalent bonding.
  3. The last electron goes to outermost s-orbital, in all elements of group one. Showing similar properties with element with atomic number one.
  4. Chlorine belongs to third period. Upon gaining an electron it becomes an anion. Cl + e- Cl-
