Question

If 20 g HCl reacts with 20 g Calcium Carbonate. Calculate the amount of Carbon Dioxide formed during the reaction.

Open in App
Solution

CaCO3 + 2HCl ------------> CaCl2(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

According to the reaction,

1 mol = 100 g of CaCO3 reacts with 2 mol = 73 g of HCl to give 1 mol = 44 g CO2.

We are given 20 g = 0.2 mol of CaCO3 and 20 g = 0.55 mol HCl.

Here, CaCO3 is the limiting reagant (will finish first than HCl).

0.2 mol CaCO3 will react with 0.4 mol HCl to give 0.2 mol CO2, according to the reaction.

Amount of CO2 produced = 0.2 x 44 = 8.8 g.
