if a force is applied perpendicular to direction of force it changes only the direction of the moving body ?is it true?why?

When the force is applied perpendicular to the the direction of motion, we know the work done is zero. Since the work done is zero, there will be no change in speed. But due to the force in the perpendicular direction, there exists a torque which changes the direction of motion.
