The mRNA is polycistronic or monocistronic. A mRNA is said to be monocistronic when it contains genetic information to make or synthesize only one protein. Eg. Almost all eukaryotes

On the other hand when a mRNA molecule has several open reading frames each of which can be synthesized frames into different polypeptide then it is called polycistronic. All prokaryotes including bacteria have polycistronic m RNA.
