Question

if coal has been formed from wood of trees.why then trees are renewable resources and coal non renewable?

Solution

Coal is a fossil fuel formed from the decomposition of dead plants and animals (that were buried under the earth) by the action of pressure, intense heat and microorganisms. It takes millions of years for the formation of coal. Hence it cannot be renewed or regenerated again in a short interval of time. It also cannot be reused. The coal reserves are limited and expected to vanish in the near future. Because of this, coal is regarded as a non-renewable resource of energy.

On the other hand, the availability of wood is not limited. This is because trees do not need millions of years for growing, and a young plant grows into a tree fast. In other words, wood can be reused and regenerated again in a short period of time unlike coal and other fossil fuels. Thus we cannot say that wood is expected to vanish from the earth one day. Therefore wood cannot be regarded as non-renewable.
