Question

If earth holds moon in its orbit by gravity why do astronuts float in space (in the space between earth and moon)?

Solution

The gravitational influence of the earth is of very little consequence for the astronauts when they are on the moon, it being very far away. Now, the gravity exerted by the moon due to its smaller mass is very small compared to the earth (around 1/6th of it) and so astronauts tends to float around quite a bit on its surface.
